Omaha College Fair ... April 24
The spring college fair is a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors-to-be to start focusing in on a good college fit.  Plan on heading to Burke High School on the evening of Tuesday, April 24 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Local Scholarship Applications Available!
Local scholarship applications have been arriving in my office and will continue to do so in the weeks ahead.  I will post all local scholarship applications in the PHS-Local Scholarships folder below.  Most local scholarships have an April 1 deadline.  Pay close attention to whether or not your application should be submitted to the Counselor's Office or to the sponsoring organization.  See Mr. Stanton if you have questions.
Need a Transcript Sent?
College admissions offices, military recruiters, and scholarship committees are a few of the groups that request high school coursework records, commonly referred to as an Official Transcript.  Students needing transcripts sent can contact Mrs. Kulm, Registrar, in the High School Office.  There is no cost for that service.

If you ever encounter a college or university that requires that your transcript be delivered electronically, that can be accommodated at docufide.comPlatteview High School has had an account with Docufide for several years as we took advantage of a grant that allowed us to subscribe at no cost.  Be aware that Docufide does charge a fee to individual students for their electronic transcript delivery service.

Contact Mr. Stanton if you have any questions.

Coming Soon to PHS … ACT Test Prep & Scholarship Search Help!
Beginning with seniors in the fall semester, Platteview HS students will have the opportunity to participate in the John Baylor Test Prep program. This proven program will help PHS students maximize their ACT scores … a critical factor in gaining college admission and in earning college scholarships.

Also coming this fall is MyAppCentral, an online scholarship search and application tool. MyAppCentral will help seniors find money for college, assist in organizing applications materials, and keep track of deadlines and applications that have been submitted. It’s a powerful tool that all college-bound seniors need to take advantage of!

Look for an announcement about a senior student and parent meeting … details about the Baylor Test Prep and MyAppCentral will be shared then!
ACT Test Dates for 2011-12
The ACT will be offered during the 2011-12 school year on September 10, October 22, December 10, February 11, April 14, and June 9.  Students can register online at actstudent.org.  If preferred, a paper registration packet can be requested from the Counselor's Office in August.  Registration deadlines for each test date are typically 5-6 weeks in advance of the actual test date.

All seniors will be given an ACT prep booklet at the beginning of the school year.  Underclassmen can request that booklet as well.  There are many resources available for preparing for the ACT, some free and some at a cost.  The Assistance League of Omaha offers a prep course at a reasonable cost.  Information on that course is available from and will be distributed by the Counselor's Office.
Go.Visit.College!
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman is promoting a new statewide initiative, Go.Visit.College!  The purpose of the initiative is to encourage high school students to visit a college campus, especially students who have doubts about continuing their education after high school.  For more information about the initiative, how to participate, college contacts, and great advice, open the Counselor's Mailbag-Colleges folder at the bottom of this page.  There you will find a file named Go Visit College that contains lots of great information about getting started with your college search.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Changes ACT Score Policy
Beginning with students seeking admission in the fall of 2011, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) will only accept ACT scores reported directly from ACT, Inc.  That means that students considering enrolling at that school should be certain to include UNL on the list of score recipients during the ACT registration process.  Scores reported on an official high school transcript will not be sufficient for UNL's Office of Admission as they consider a student's admission application.  Contact Mr. Stanton with questions.
